The Basics

Personality: Lei’ella, at heart, is a remarkably naïve, sweet and loyal person. However, this side of her takes trust to reveal. She has deceptively low self-confidence, and is deeply insecure, having spent much of her life an exile and convinced herself that no one could accept her as she is. She can be very quick to anger and threaten violence, but this is mostly a front to not appear weak. While she could do damage, it’s more the threat that she wants others to believe. If thwarted, however, she is very quickly taken off-guard.

However, once won over she is a loyal friend, rashly risking anything for their sake. She can be very naïve due to her somewhat single-minded self-raising. Things are often very black and white to her, but she can be worn down to see things as they are, as both Acheron and Varden were able to show, over time. Many insecurities still remain for her, though, as decades of feeling like a pariah cannot be undone quickly, even after discovering she has worth, and is loved. Also, until she trusts someone, she may be very judgmental and openly so.

It doesn’t usually take long for her to loosen up if someone appears trustworthy and is open, as well. She has a suppressed desire to trust, and an even deeper desire to be needed and have worth, so anyone who appears to share a common goal or makes an effort to reach out to her will no doubt win her trust more swiftly than someone who is shifty or closed-off.

Abilities and Weaponry: Lei’ella’s elven heritage left her with no magical abilities, per se, except for the ability to sense other people’s locations once she has become familiar with them. This was very useful to her in her profession, as it greatly improved her likelihood of finding her mark. She can sense a presence, as well as a person’s general feelings/emotions; the more familiar, the further the distance.

While not nearly as skilled as she thinks she is, Lei’ella knows her way around a pair of daggers. She is lithe, in good shape, and quite agile, and against someone with little to moderate skill stands a very good chance at catching him by surprise and overpowering him. However, if caught off guard, she stands much less a chance as it usually shocks her, sometimes in a way that causes her to block swiftly, and sometimes in a way that gets her cornered. If against a skilled opponent, she is overconfident and may most likely be bested.

Her weapons are, as mentioned, a matching pair of small daggers, which are kept in their sheathes attached to her belt.

Weaknesses: Lei’ella’s overconfidence in her skills can be a weakness, as she may find herself challenging an opponent that is much higher in skill, but not realizing that she doesn’t stand a chance. She may be quick to challenging or threatening before thinking the situation through, attempting to prove she is strong and confident. She tends to lead into her moves quite a bit, almost an open book to a skilled opponent.

Mentally, she is still rather self-deprecating, and is easily discouraged, even though she puts on a good show. If taunted about her past, or anything she lacks, she might either become completely depressed or lash out rashly, and her temper can make her reactions unpredictable.

Her friends may also be a weakness for her, as having someone to care about is so new to her, she would likely do most anything to help them or save them.

History: The elves are a magical race, their spirits deeply connected to the earth. It’s speculated that this connection is the underlying source of their immortality. Never had there been an elf who died of old age. Then a strange thing happened. Elves were born with previously unseen coloring: silver platinum hair, and golden eyes. They had no grasp of magic. They were mortal. The elves, in their wisdom, decided the cause was a malady, a disease, contagious, even, and once able to fend for themselves, these elves were sent away, exiled from the unaffected. Lei’ella is one of these ostracized.

She was born in the elven city of Inverloch, but when she was merely 12 years old she was sent away like those before her. There had been another elf around her age, Kayn’dar, who had provided hope for healing the magic-less, mortal elves, but he vanished. Kidnapped? The elves didn’t know. At this, all hope was disappeared. Lei’ella raised herself, centering around Strathwood, and chose a career as a thief-catcher: a mercenary commissioned to hunt down and kill or capture various ne’er-do-wells.

All the while she hid her identity as an elf, covering her “abnormal” hair and eyes always beneath a cloak, fearing that no one could accept her if her own race would not. She spent the better part of a decade in this profession, making very few acquaintances, and earning herself a reputation as a shadow. She had a brief almost-relationship with a then fellow thief-catcher Berard, who pursued her and even proposed. Lei’ella laughed at him, cut his leg, and fled. However, after some thought, she had decided that he was her only chance at ever having a family and children and had decided to accept. But when she revealed her elven heritage to him, he turned her away.

Always, in the back of her mind, she thought of the missing elf Kayn’dar, wondering and hoping that, if found, he could heal her and she could return to the elves. One day, a Da’kor named Acheron came into her life. She had sensed a faint elven presence from him, and sought him out, only to discover he was actually looking for her. After a brief encounter during which she saved a hapless Acheron from Berard, she felt connected to him. She learned that he was searching for Kayn’dar, as a favor to an elf that he had become attached to. Lei’ella trusted him and his purity, and found herself offering to help him in his endeavor. She being the world-wise thief-catcher, of course.

In the city of Rhyll, another member joined their party, and his name was Varden, a thief of some renown. Lei’ella distrusted him immediately, catching onto his clever lies and feeling that he was nothing more than the scum she’d spent years scraping from her boots. However, there was much more to him than met the eye, and Acheron saw that. So, Varden continued with them to Aydensfell, where they found themselves with another party member, a young mage by name of Neirenn. After a chat with the Archmage and Neirenn’s father, they had another solid lead to the location of Kayn’dar, by way of searching for someone named Silvah, and were sent further south to the city of Muirfold.

In Muirfold their journey took the first of truly dangerous turns, as Acheron was captured by Berard, who had been pursuing them all the way. He was forced to fight in a death-match, but Varden, who knew Berard previously, was able to bribe his way into being the challenger, cleverly knocking Acheron unconscious in the match. Lei’ella didn’t know his plan until after it had been accomplished, and when Berard saw Varden comforting a distraught Lei’ella, he attacked Varden, and was thusly slain by Varden in an unprecedented turn. The three retrieved Acheron, and managed to safely make their way further south.

Varden begins to open up to Lei’ella, sharing many details of his past. Lei’ella receives his past easier than expected, but does not reveal much about herself in turn, still having never let him see her without her hood covering her ears, fearing that if he knew she was an elf he would hate her for it. The two are still bonded after this experience, however, and spend a lot of time talking amongst themselves.

The four make their way to an apparently deserted tower, the likes of which Silvah is rumoured to inhabit frequently. After a clever dissipating of the magical shield by Neirenn, they break in and make their way up the stairs, where they find none other than a platinum-haired, golden-eyed elf calling himself Silvah. He claims that he and Kayn’dar were kidnapped at the same time, and Kayn’dar was slain. The group leaves him feeling very disheartened that their journey would end this way. However, that night Lei’ella, after much thought, comes to the conclusion that Silvah is, in fact, Kayn’dar, and the group plan to return to the tower to confront him the following morning.

So, the travelers barge their way into the tower, only to be met with powerful resistance. After a few brief moments of lines sent back and forth, the flood gates open and all of Lei’ella’s pent up anger and angst come flowing out, accusing Kayn’dar of failure to save his own people, expressing her deep disappointment and anger that he never returned to heal her and others like her. She’d always hoped for him, and he’d turned out to be the opposite of everything she’d created in her mind. He shoots back that she is no better than any mortal man, and with magic, removes her hood, revealing her hidden features.

Kayn’dar’s mentor, Raul, the excommunicated former archmage of Aydensfell, fears that Lei’ella may have sensed something about their diabolical plans, and orders Kayn’dar to kill her. When Kayn’dar is reluctant, Raul begins to attack her with a constricting-like magic, even as Varden attempts to face his fear of magic and steps in front of her, trying to protect her. He is tossed aside by magic, and after some convincing, Kayn’dar magically sends Lei’ella’s own dagger into her stomach, wounding her gravely. The deed done, Kayn’dar and Raul vanish magically.

Varden rushes to her, and while holding her reveals that he already knew she was an elf and just wanted her to trust him enough to tell him herself. The wound appears to be fatal, and Acheron and Neirenn argue back and forth, trying to find a way to save her. Finally, Acheron decides to try to use the memories of Kayn’dar that remain in a necklace her possesses, and attempts to heal Lei’ella himself. And he does. She is healed by magic wielded by a Da’kor through a necklace. She remains awake long enough to thank him, then passes out asleep, her body trying to recover from healing.

All the while, Varden remains with her, as just about everything has been laid in the open between them. When she awakes, they spend some time talking, the bond between them obviously strengthened. When Neirenn and Acheron return from searching for water, Lei’ella reveals to them the story of Kayn’dar and of the elves inflicted by mortality and lack of magic, along with her past regarding it. They set out from the tower, intent on returning to Inverloch to inform the elves of what they’ve uncovered. On the way, Varden and Lei’ella acquire new clothing and daggers for her, as her old thief-catcher uniform and matching pink daggers were no longer appropriate. Varden and Lei’ella spend considerable time sparring together, Varden attempting to teach her how to fight properly, while Neirenn tries to learn a spell that will simply portal them to Inverloch and save them the walk.

After a somewhat tense moment, Lei’ella is cornered by Varden, after an impressive block when caught off-guard, and he leans in for what would have inevitably been their first kiss. However, at that moment, they find themselves caught up in a magical portal that was created by the Archmage in Aydensfell, and was intended to bring them back to his office. But that is not where Lei’ella found herself when the mists cleared.
